Smart Trigger — one second chance, measured against a control group

Anyone who closes a popup normally never sees it again. The Smart Trigger makes exactly one exception: if a visitor still shows clear interest afterwards, the same popup may appear a second time in the same session. Whether that brings more signups is measured against a random control group.

Enabling it

The Smart Trigger needs a paid plan (Basic or higher). On a paid plan the Smart Trigger switch appears in the popup list and in the editor's Triggers area — per popup. On Free, the switch shows Paid plan required with a See plans link to your plans in Settings.

If a note appears instead of the switch, it names the reason: Paid plan required (no paid plan), Shop not enabled (Smart Trigger is not switched on for your shop yet — email support@popuplift.com), Accept the updated data processing agreement (your shop has not accepted the version that covers Smart Trigger yet — reopen PopUplift to review and accept it), Managed (a running A/B test controls the switch) or Popup archived.

If you switch it on for a popup that isn't published yet, it takes effect once you publish.

How the second chance works

  1. Your popup first opens as usual through its Basic triggers (time, scroll depth, exit intent, cart) — the Smart Trigger does not replace them.
  2. If the visitor closes it, PopUplift watches in the browser for up to five minutes whether interest continues — across page changes too.
  3. If the visitor reaches the threshold, PopUplift assigns them at random to one of two groups: one gets the second chance, the control group deliberately doesn't.
  4. In the second chance, the same popup opens again — at the step where the visitor left off.

Across all popups there is at most one such second chance per session. If the visitor closes it again, signs up, or the time window ends, the opportunity is over.

What it needs — and what doesn't happen

  • Visitor consent. The Smart Trigger only runs if the visitor agreed to marketing and analytics in your shop's cookie banner. Without consent, the popup behaves normally.
  • Nothing personal goes to the server. Watching happens in the browser. Page URLs, cart contents or click targets don't leave the browser for it.
  • No risk to the normal popup. If a requirement is missing, the Basic triggers keep working unchanged.
  • No self-learning. The threshold is fixed; PopUplift does not learn automatically from your visitors.

Reading the result

On the popup's detail page, the Smart Trigger card shows both groups side by side: how many visitors were assigned, how often the second chance was actually visible, and how many new email signups each group brought. The difference follows from that — absolute and relative.

A statement about the effect only appears once there are enough completed, comparable observations. Until then it says Collecting comparable outcomes or No reliable difference yet. The older counters below (legacy) are diagnostics, not proof of additional signups.
