Klaviyo, SMS and WhatsApp — where signups go

PopUplift collects signups in the popup and hands them to your tools: email addresses to Klaviyo, WhatsApp contacts from your automation to the lead list. This article shows what gets connected where, and what PopUplift does itself — and what it doesn't.

Connect Klaviyo

Under Settings → Integrations → Klaviyo, click Connect with Klaviyo and approve on the Klaviyo login screen. The connection uses OAuth; private API keys are no longer supported. Check which Klaviyo account you are signed in to first — if you manage several accounts, it is easy to authorize the wrong one with a single click.

If the connected Klaviyo account changes later, the card shows a notice: check the selected list before you publish again.

Disconnect from the same card. From that click on, PopUplift stops sending new contacts to Klaviyo; profiles already in your Klaviyo stay there.

List and opt-in

In the Opt-in step of setup (and in the editor's Klaviyo area) you pick the list that new signups go into. Whether that list uses single or double opt-in is set in Klaviyo — PopUplift adopts the setting and shows it. If it changes later, the settings card points it out; the Klaviyo list is always authoritative. If another of your flows triggers on the same list, the step warns “Another Klaviyo flow can send a second reward” — the fix is in Your welcome flow.

  • Double opt-in — the visitor confirms by email. The usual choice in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and required for sending the code by email after confirmation.
  • Single opt-in — Klaviyo subscribes the contact right away; there is no confirmation to wait for.

What PopUplift passes to Klaviyo

Every signup lands in the selected list. PopUplift also writes to the Klaviyo profile:

PropertyContent
{{ person.popuplift_offer }}the personal discount code
{{ person.popuplift_offer_text }}name of the offer
{{ person.popuplift_discount }}formatted percentage, e.g. “5 %” (percentage rewards only)
{{ person.popuplift_discount_value }}percentage number, e.g. 5 (percentage rewards only)

For quiz popups, the chosen answer is added too. PopUplift builds segments from it automatically — see Quiz segments.

When a code is released, PopUplift also sends the event PopupLift Reward Released. A flow with that trigger knows {{ event.code }} and further event variables. Which option suits your flow is explained in The reward email.

Klaviyo sends the emails from your flows — PopUplift never emails your customers. How to avoid double discounts with an existing welcome flow: Your welcome flow.

WhatsApp in the popup

A button in the popup can open WhatsApp. Select the button in the editor and choose Set up as WhatsApp action:

  • Number or link — a mobile number with country code (e.g. +49 151 23456789) or a full wa.me link.
  • Message (prefilled) — text that is already in WhatsApp's input field. Leave it empty to remove it.
  • Open WhatsApp after a successful email submit — the visitor submits their email first, then WhatsApp opens. Only a valid, successful submission continues.
  • Return step — which step appears again when the visitor comes back from WhatsApp.

Without any further setup, PopUplift measures how often visitors are handed over to WhatsApp. Which contacts actually arrive there only becomes visible with a connected source (next section).

Code via WhatsApp: under Code delivery you can choose Send the code via WhatsApp. PopUplift then opens WhatsApp, and your automation sends the code. This needs a WhatsApp action in the popup, a reward with a fixed code (an external automation doesn't know unique codes), and your confirmation My WhatsApp automation is set up and sends the reward code. PopUplift can't check whether the message was actually sent.

Connect Superchat (optional)

Under Settings → Integrations → Superchat → Open you connect your WhatsApp automation so that real WhatsApp contacts reach PopUplift:

  1. Set up connection — PopUplift shows a callback URL and a token. The token is shown only once; copy it right away.
  2. Create source — e.g. “Direct to WhatsApp”. A source links contacts to a WhatsApp action in the popup.
  3. Enter the callback URL and token in your WhatsApp automation and use the payload example (Copy payload example) as the body (8 KiB at most).
  4. Trigger a test delivery and check the status. The example sends mode: "test": it only sets “Test received” and creates no lead.
  5. Then switch your automation to mode: "live". Only then are WhatsApp contacts created; the status switches to “Receiving” once the first real message arrives.

Real contacts then appear under Leads as WhatsApp contact. Important: a WhatsApp contact is not a newsletter subscription and not marketing consent — it only shows that someone messaged you through your automation. Without a connection, everything stays as before.

You can rotate the token (Rotate token), disconnect (Disconnect) and reactivate the connection later (Reactivate connection) at any time.

SMS (coming soon)

Phone-number capture with SMS consent and hand-off to a Klaviyo SMS list is in the works and not yet enabled for all shops.
